There may be a way to get human cells to modify themselves back into stem cells for instant evolution using the junk DNA in the system. In other words, we might be able to get a human being to grow gills during a space flight for use once they get to their destination, or modify lungs to accept atmospheres much different from here on Earth. Consider if you will that other planets will have different percentages of gases in their atmosphere, which could cause instant havoc for the robust, but specifically evolved human bio-system.
Interestingly enough there is an Israeli firm that is working on "coaxing cells to reverse back to stem cells" and one can only imagine the incredible breakthrough for degenerative diseases, but I say let's look into the future and see what we can really do with such technology, and let's see if we can use different frequencies and spectrums of light to help move this along. With this ability we might be able to build cities and towns at the top of the highest mountains in the world.
There are Tibetians for instance, with slightly different mitochondrial DNA which allows them to live up at high altitudes just like llamas and other animals. A slight modification and all of a sudden all those areas are not inhabitable. Also there are some people with the special ability to keep from freezing in very cold water, so, a couple of modifications here, and a few there, and we are well on our way to doing just about anything we want for specific needs.
For long-term space flight, no need to worry about bone density loss, just keep the bones tuned up and allow the body to continually regenerate. By the way such a technology might be the answer to infinite life spans too. Thus, this idea, concept, and space application is one of my two daily "original thoughts" for June 30, 2010. Could be worth 100s of millions of dollars in commercial value if acted upon.
