Merino Sheep Shearing

Vegans have a deep respect for all living creatures. Not only do they avoid meat like vegetarians do, but they also avoid eggs, yeast, milk, and honey, believing that no living thing should suffer just to feed them.

To many people, a vegan diet is considered to be very extreme. It is true that the vegan lifestyle can be restricting, but the cause is very noble. Vegans make their food choices around the avoidance of causing suffering to any living thing wherever they can.

Many vegans take their commitment to this cause well beyond their food choices. True vegans will prevent animal death and suffering in any capacity. For example, a vegan who has made this commitment would not even wear wool.

Most vegans are opposed to the way scientists have altered the natural evolution of animals for the sake of human products. Over the years, sheep have been bred to generate large amounts of wool. Merino sheep, for example, would be half of their own weight without all that wool.

Because the Merino sheep have far more wool than they need to keep warm, many of them actually die of heat exhaustion. After Merino sheep are sheared, many of them then freeze to death with none of their own wool to stay warm.

The wool shearing process is not a pleasant one for the sheep. Almost one-fourth of the wool we get from sheep is so close to their skin that it is actually torn, not cut, off of them. This wool is referred to as 'skin wool.'

If you have adopted a vegetarian lifestyle out of a desire to reduce animal suffering, you may want to consider the vegan lifestyle. Chances are, the clothing you are wearing is causing animal suffering.

Ethical choices will vary from person to person. Some believe that wearing animal products is alright, while others do not. The important thing is to be aware of the products you buy so that you can stick to your own ethical code.
